Is a “motherboard” the same as a “logic board”?

There are no manufacturers who refer to their Ryzen 3rd Gen motherboards as “logic boards” when you try to find the best one. There is a similar case with the latest Intel 9th Gen processor motherboards. Let’s look at both terms to see how they’re similar and different simultaneously.

Motherboard

Motherboards have never been expandable in the past. Everything had to be placed into a single chip to work properly.

Etymology

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word “motherboard” was first used in a 1971 excerpt. “One daughterboard that is mounted vertically on a computer-sized motherboard,” as per the British journal Electrical and Electronics Abstracts in an article on the subject.

The initial personal computers typically had the main circuit board with slots and connectors for smaller integrated chips, just like today’s motherboards. The larger board was dubbed a motherboard because the smaller chips were called “daughter boards”.

Definition

Today, a search for the term “motherboard” will return the primary description as a computer system’s main printed circuit board. Other computer chips can be attached to it using a rigid, slotted PCB.

These definitions will be accompanied by others, such as mainboard, system board, baseboard, planar board, and logic board.

Other Names

It is possible to refer to a primary component of a system using the terms “mainboard,” “system board,” or “baseboard,” depending on the context. The time “motherboard” can be replaced with any of these terms. We may have oversimplified things using terms like “planar board” and “logic board.” Check out the Macbook Air A1932 Logic Board.

Daughter boards and motherboards can be called planar boards. Nowadays, there is no reference to a “planar board” when referring to other components that can be mounted to a motherboard in the technical community. The first two syllables of the compound word “motherboard” have earned the nickname “mobo.”

In today’s world, daughterboards can be anything from storage drives to processors to graphics cards. Acronyms and shortcuts proliferated in computer jargon due to new components with ever-expanding names. CPUs, DIMMs, GPUs, HDDs, SDDs, VRMs, MOSFETs, and a slew of other components are at your disposal.

Description and Purpose

A computer’s motherboard serves as its central nervous system. It houses all of the system’s communication and power supply circuits, making it the heart of the entire machine. The slots, sockets, and connectors on a modern motherboard can be seen. These slots, sockets, and connectors connect the motherboard’s circuitry to the daughter boards. Depending on the attachment method used, the daughter boards will either be held in place by screws or clips. These daughterboards can be easily replaced or upgraded because they are connected via these slots, sockets, and connectors. To upgrade, you wouldn’t have to buy and replace every single component of a desktop computer. The main selling point of PCs and PC motherboards is buying and upgrading individual components.
